How To Get Rid of Phlegm And Mucus

Posted on March 16, 2026 by Admin

Getting rid of excess phlegm and mucus (often linked with conditions like Common Cold, Sinusitis, or Bronchitis) usually involves loosening the mucus and helping your body clear it out. Here are simple, effective methods:

1. Drink Plenty of Warm Fluids ☕

Warm liquids help thin mucus, making it easier to cough out.
Good options include:

  • Warm water with lemon
  • Herbal teas
  • Chicken soup

2. Use Steam Inhalation 🌫️

Breathing warm steam helps loosen mucus in the nose, throat, and lungs.

How to do it:

  1. Boil water and pour it into a bowl.
  2. Lean over the bowl and cover your head with a towel.
  3. Inhale the steam for 5–10 minutes.

3. Gargle with Salt Water 🧂

Saltwater helps clear mucus from the throat.

Method:

  • Mix ½ teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water.
  • Gargle for 30 seconds, 2–3 times daily.

4. Use Honey and Ginger 🍯

Honey soothes the throat while ginger may help reduce mucus buildup.

Simple remedy:

  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • A little grated ginger
    Take it 2–3 times daily.

5. Keep the Air Moist 💧

Using a humidifier or sitting in a steamy bathroom can prevent mucus from becoming thick and sticky.

6. Avoid Mucus-Triggering Foods

For some people, these can increase mucus:

  • Dairy products
  • Fried foods
  • Sugary drinks

⚠️ See a doctor if:

  • Mucus lasts more than 10 days
  • You have high fever
  • Mucus is green, brown, or contains blood
