I got my first slow cooker last week, and today my roommate thought it was a good idea to heat up—you guess what—in it. This is what happened. Apparently, she didn’t know that you cannot put anything in the slow cooker!

Oh no 😬—this is a classic first–slow cooker mistake, and you’re definitely not alone. Slow cookers are amazing, but there are very real rules about what you can (and absolutely cannot) put in them.

Here’s what likely happened—and what everyone should know 👇


🚫 You Cannot Put Just Anything in a Slow Cooker

Slow cookers heat slowly, unevenly, and for long periods, which makes certain foods and items dangerous or disastrous.

🔥 What Probably Happened

Your roommate likely tried to heat something that:

  • Doesn’t tolerate long, moist heat
  • Needs high heat quickly
  • Is unsafe at low temperatures

The result is usually:

  • Burnt or scorched food on the bottom
  • A terrible smell that won’t leave the kitchen
  • Curled, rubbery, or broken food
  • Sometimes even cracked ceramic inserts or melted components

❌ Things You Should NEVER Put in a Slow Cooker

🥛 Dairy (on its own)

  • Milk, cream, sour cream, yogurt
  • They curdle, separate, or burn
  • Only add dairy at the very end of cooking

🍚 Dry rice or pasta (without enough liquid)

  • Absorbs liquid unevenly
  • Ends up half raw, half mush
  • Can scorch the pot

🥚 Raw eggs

  • Slow cookers don’t get hot fast enough
  • Bacteria risk + rubbery texture

🥦 Delicate vegetables

  • Spinach, zucchini, broccoli
  • Turn to mush or bitter sludge
  • Add during the last 30–60 minutes only

🧴 Non-food items (yes, people try)

  • Jar candles, wax, soap, or anything “DIY”
  • Can crack the ceramic, release fumes, or ruin the cooker permanently

🍫 Chocolate by itself

  • Scorches easily
  • Turns grainy and burnt instead of smooth

✅ What Slow Cookers ARE Great For

  • Tough cuts of meat (chuck roast, pork shoulder)
  • Soups, stews, chili
  • Beans (pre-soaked)
  • Sauces with enough liquid
  • One-pot comfort meals

⚠️ Why This Matters (Safety Warning)

Slow cookers:

  • Stay in the bacterial danger zone longer than stovetops
  • Rely on moisture to regulate heat
  • Can overheat and crack if misused

Improper use can mean:

  • Food poisoning
  • Fire risk
