If you have lines on your nails, it means you have ca…See more

If you have lines on your nails, it does not automatically mean cancer—that’s a common misconception.

What it can mean depends on the type of lines:

🧬 1. Vertical ridges (most common)

Lines that run from cuticle to tip are usually:

  • Normal with aging
  • Due to dry nails
  • Mild nutrient deficiencies (like iron or B vitamins)
  • Harmless in most cases

👉 Very common after age 40–50.

⚫ 2. Horizontal lines (Beau’s lines)

These look like deep grooves across the nail and can be linked to:

  • Recent illness or high fever
  • Severe stress or surgery
  • Temporary interruption of nail growth
  • Poor nutrition

They usually grow out over time.

⚠️ 3. Dark streaks (important to check)

A dark brown or black line running through the nail can sometimes indicate something serious, including a rare type of skin cancer called subungual melanoma (a form of skin cancer under the nail).

But more commonly it may be:

  • A mole under the nail
  • Minor bleeding (trauma)
  • Pigmentation changes (especially in darker skin tones)

👉 This is the only type that should not be ignored if it:

  • Is new
  • Changes in size or color
  • Spreads to surrounding skin
  • Appears in one nail only

🩺 When to see a doctor

Get checked if you notice:

  • Sudden new dark streak
  • Pain, bleeding, or nail deformity
  • Rapid changes in a single nail
  • Lines accompanied by other skin changes

✔️ Bottom line

  • Most nail lines are harmless and age-related
  • Only dark, changing streaks need urgent medical attention
  • Nail changes are often more about nutrition, aging, or stress than serious disease

If you want, you can describe or send what your nail looks like, and I can help you figure out what type of line it might be.
