My nana taught me this trick to unclog drains with 0 effort. Here’s how it works

Posted on February 19, 2026 by Admin

That sounds like the classic baking soda + vinegar drain trick many grandmas swear by 😊

Here’s how it works — and how to do it the right way so it actually helps.

🚿 Nana’s Easy Drain-Unclogging Trick

🧂 What You Need

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Boiling water

🔥 Step-by-Step

1️⃣ Pour baking soda directly into the drain.
2️⃣ Add vinegar slowly. It will fizz immediately.
3️⃣ Cover the drain (with a plug or cloth) and let it sit 15–30 minutes.
4️⃣ Flush with a pot of boiling water.

Done.

🧪 Why It Works

  • The fizzing reaction helps loosen grease and debris.
  • Baking soda helps deodorize.
  • The hot water melts soap scum and grease.

It’s especially effective for:

  • Bathroom sink buildup
  • Mild kitchen grease clogs
  • Slow drains

⚠️ Important Truth

This works best for light or early clogs.
It won’t clear:

  • Solid blockages
  • Hair-packed traps
  • Deep pipe obstructions

For tougher clogs, a plunger or drain snake may be needed.

💡 Pro Tip Most People Miss

After pouring the vinegar, cover the drain.
That forces the fizzing action downward into the pipe instead of bubbling upward.

If you tell me where the clog is (kitchen sink, shower, tub), I can give you the most effective version for that specific drain.
