Natural methods to combat ants: How to get rid of these uninvited guests without chemicals

Posted on July 5, 2026 by Admin

Getting rid of ants without harsh chemicals is very doable—you just need to break their scent trails, remove food access, and make your home less attractive to them.

Here are effective natural methods that actually work:

1) Vinegar solution (best all-round deterrent)

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
Spray it on:

  • Ant trails
  • Entry points (windows, doors, cracks)
  • Kitchen counters

Vinegar wipes out the pheromone trail ants use to follow each other, so they get “lost” and stop coming back to the same path.

2) Lemon juice

Similar effect to vinegar. Squeeze lemon juice or use diluted juice on entry points. The acidity disrupts scent trails and ants dislike the smell.

3) Cinnamon, cloves, or black pepper

These strong-smelling spices confuse and repel ants.

You can:

  • Sprinkle powdered cinnamon near entry points
  • Place cloves in cupboards or near suspected entry routes

It doesn’t kill them, but it strongly discourages movement.

4) Peppermint oil (very effective repellent)

Ants hate mint.

Mix:

  • 10–15 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 cup water

Spray around doors, windows, and cracks.

If you don’t have oil, even mint leaves can help a little.

5) Baking soda + sugar trap (natural bait method)

Mix equal parts baking soda and sugar:

  • Sugar attracts ants
  • Baking soda disrupts their system after ingestion

Place small amounts near ant trails (out of reach of pets/children).

6) Boiling water (for outdoor nests)

If you find the nest outside:

  • Carefully pour boiling water directly into it
This can significantly reduce the colony size.

7) Keep things clean (most important step)

No remedy works if food is always available:

  • Wipe crumbs immediately
  • Store food in airtight containers
  • Don’t leave dirty dishes overnight
  • Clean pet food bowls regularly

8) Seal entry points

Check for:

  • Cracks in walls
  • Gaps around windows/doors
  • Pipe openings

Seal with silicone or filler so ants can’t re-enter.

Key reality check

Natural methods work best for small to moderate infestations. If ants keep returning in large numbers, there’s likely a nest nearby or inside a wall, and you may need stronger baiting or professional pest control.

If you want, tell me where you’re seeing them (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, specific wall corner), and I can help you pinpoint the exact cause and fastest fix.
