The statement “If you always sleep on your right side, you should have…” is usually followed by a scary-sounding claim online, but sleeping on your right side is not automatically harmful.

For many people, right-side sleeping is completely normal. Possible effects include:

  • ✅ Comfort and easier breathing: Side sleeping can reduce snoring for some people compared with sleeping on their back.
  • ⚠️ Acid reflux: Some people with heartburn may notice symptoms are worse when sleeping on the right side; left-side sleeping is often recommended for reflux.
  • ⚠️ Pressure on one shoulder or hip: Staying in one position all night can contribute to soreness, especially with poor pillow or mattress support.

There is no evidence that always sleeping on the right side causes a specific disease in healthy people.

You may want to adjust your sleeping position if you regularly wake with:

  • Shoulder, hip, or neck pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Worsening heartburn
  • Breathing problems during sleep
