old-fashioned chocolate brownies

Here’s a recipe for old-fashioned chocolate brownies—rich, fudgy, and simple, just like the classic treats from back in the day. 🍫


Ingredients

  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120 g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts or chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Prep the Pan

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C)
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper

2. Melt Butter and Sugar

  • Melt butter in a saucepan or microwave
  • Stir in sugar until well combined

3. Add Eggs and Vanilla

  • Let the mixture cool slightly
  • Beat in eggs one at a time
  • Add vanilla extract

4. Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt
  • Gradually fold dry ingredients into the wet mixture
  • Mix until just combined (don’t overmix)

5. Add Extras

  • Stir in nuts or chocolate chips if using

6. Bake

  • Pour batter into the prepared pan
  • Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean (a few crumbs are okay for fudgy brownies)

7. Cool and Serve

  • Let brownies cool completely before cutting for clean squares
  • Serve as is or dust with powdered sugar

💡 Old-Fashioned Brownie Tips

  • For extra fudgy brownies, slightly underbake by a couple of minutes
  • For cakier brownies, add an extra egg
  • Avoid overmixing once the flour is added to keep them tender
