Pouring brown gravy over raw cube steaks is actually the start of a classic comfort-food method called “smothered cube steak.” 🥩🍲 Instead of frying first, the gravy cooks the meat slowly, making it tender and flavorful.
Ingredients
- 4 Cube steaks
- 1 packet or ½ cup Brown gravy mix (or homemade gravy)
- 2 cups Beef broth
- 1 Onion, sliced
- 1–2 tbsp Vegetable oil (optional, for searing)
- Salt and Black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Optional sear
- Heat oil in a skillet and lightly brown the cube steaks for a minute or two per side. This adds flavor but isn’t strictly necessary.
2. Add gravy
- Place the steaks in a baking dish or skillet.
- Pour prepared brown gravy over the raw steaks.
- Add sliced onions on top.
3. Slow cook
- Oven: Cover and bake at 175°C (350°F) for 1–1.5 hours.
- Stovetop: Cover and simmer on low for 1–1.5 hours.
4. Serve
- The meat should be tender and infused with the gravy.
- Serve with Mashed potatoes, Rice, or Egg noodles to soak up the sauce.
✅ Tip: For extra richness, stir a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pat of Butter into the gravy before baking.
This method turns inexpensive cube steaks into a tender, flavorful meal without much prep.
