🥩 Salisbury Steak (Classic Comfort Dish)

Tender, savory beef patties smothered in rich onion and mushroom gravy — a diner favorite you can make at home.

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Patties:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Patties

  1. Heat 1 tbsp butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned but not fully cooked through.
  3. Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt remaining butter.
  2. Sauté onions and mushrooms until softened.
  3. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and stir 1–2 minutes.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer 3–5 minutes until gravy thickens.

4️⃣ Finish Cooking

  1. Return patties to the skillet.
  2. Simmer in gravy 5–7 minutes until fully cooked (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).

💡 Serving Suggestions

  • Mashed potatoes or egg noodles
  • Steamed vegetables (carrots, peas, green beans)
  • Crusty bread to soak up the gravy

🔹 Pro Tips

  • For extra tenderness, add 1–2 tbsp milk to the patty mixture.
  • Use a mix of beef and pork for juicier patties.
  • Add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to the gravy for flavor boost.
