Here’s a classic, authentic Swedish meatballs recipe — creamy, comforting, and perfect with gravy 🇸🇪🍝

🥘 Swedish Meatballs (Köttbullar)

Tender, flavorful meatballs served in a rich, creamy sauce—traditionally paired with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

🧾 Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or a mix of beef & pork)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt & pepper

Cream Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream (or sour cream for tangier sauce)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

🔥 Instructions

1. Make the Meatballs

  1. Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes.
  2. Mix ground meat, soaked breadcrumbs, onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  3. Form into small meatballs (about 1 inch).

2. Cook the Meatballs

  1. Heat a skillet with butter or oil.
  2. Brown meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to be fully cooked through).
  3. Remove meatballs and set aside.

3. Make the Sauce

  1. In the same skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter.
  2. Stir in flour to make a roux, cook 1–2 minutes.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth, then cream.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  5. Simmer until slightly thickened.

4. Finish the Dish

  1. Return meatballs to the sauce.
  2. Simmer gently 10–15 minutes until meatballs are fully cooked and the sauce is creamy.
  3. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or lingonberry jam.

😋 Tips for Authentic Flavor

  • Allspice + nutmeg = signature Swedish flavor
  • Browning meatballs before simmering adds depth
  • Lingonberry jam on the side balances richness perfectly
