Wet burritos are a comfort-food classic—big, hearty burritos smothered in sauce and melted cheese. 🌯🧀

Classic Wet Burritos

Ingredients (Serves 4)

Burritos

  • 4 large flour tortillas
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or shredded chicken)
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade)
  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 1 cup cooked rice (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

Red Sauce (Simple & Fast)

  • 1 can (10 oz) enchilada sauce
    or
  • 1 cup tomato sauce + 1 tsp chili powder + 1/2 tsp cumin + 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Toppings

  • Extra shredded cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Chopped lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Sliced olives
  • Green onions

Instructions

  1. Cook the Meat
    Brown ground beef in a skillet. Drain fat. Add taco seasoning and a little water. Simmer 5 minutes.
  2. Warm Beans & Tortillas
    Heat refried beans. Warm tortillas so they’re pliable.
  3. Assemble Burritos
    On each tortilla:

    • Spread beans
    • Add meat
    • Add rice (if using)
    • Sprinkle cheese
      Roll tightly and place seam-side down in a baking dish.
  4. Make Them “Wet”
    Pour enchilada or red sauce generously over burritos.
    Top with more shredded cheese.
  5. Bake
    Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes, until hot and bubbly.
  6. Serve
    Add your favorite toppings and serve with a fork and knife.

🌯 Wet Chicken Burritos

  • Use shredded rotisserie chicken
  • Add green enchilada sauce instead of red

🌯 Bean & Cheese (Vegetarian)

  • Refried beans + rice + cheese
  • Add sautéed peppers and onions

  • Use pork chile verde sauce
  • Top with Monterey Jack cheese

  • Often topped with chili sauce
